RENEWING YOUR MIND - Something New, and Different πΉ
What is renewing your mind?
Mind renewal is a spiritual thing that begins in your inner being and over time transforms the physical organ of the brain and the nervous system through π§ neuroplasticityπ§ .
The process starts when you give your life to Jesus and receive salvation.
At the point of salvation you receive God’s Holy Spirit.
When the Holy Spirit is in you, it transforms your spirit, your soul, your thinking process, your physical body, and your heart.
So many of our patterns come from broken thinking.
Those of us in the coaching world know this deeply to be true. We tend to watch our thinking more than most.
And we are aware that everything we think is not the truth. That’s why we hire coaches because they help us see clearly. And that’s what we help our clients do as well.
From a nervous system perspective, broken ways of thinking root themselves into our body system through the mechanism of neuroplasticity which is the ability of the brain and nervous system to change its structure.
This is adaptability that can be either good or bad. It simply depends on our habitual ways of being and thinking.
πI like to say that the body comes dependent upon what it does the MOST whether good or badπ.
Addictions, trauma patterns, painful emotional cycles, bad habits? That is the bad neuroplasticity.
Learning a new skill, making a new and better decision, recovering from a physical injury - that is the good neuroplasticity.
From a spiritual perspective, the root of our faulty thinking comes from sin.
Sin is a condition of the heart that colours everything we do. Self sabotage, fear, painful relationship patterns, and trauma and all human suffering at their root are actually a result of the sinful condition of man.
Sin is the great equalizer! We all have a sinful condition.
I want to stop here and help you understand sin. It is probably the most misunderstood Christian word. Sin is not just a behaviour. Sin is a the Spiritual condition of mankind.
It’s not so much about what you do or don’t do. It’s about the brokenness of your heart. The brokennness that drives you to do things you don’t want to do. To get stuck. To miss the mark.
We can’t overcome this spiritual condition of sin on our own. We are only human after all. And God knows that. We need God. But in our sinful condition, sometimes it’s hard for us to see that.
ππΎπThat is why Jesus came ππΎπ
Romans 5:6 says:
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
We couldn’t do it on our own. We were struggling down here! So God made a way for us through Jesus.
Our father, Adam was a human who missed the mark.
And through his failure, sin (along with pain, death, suffering and trauma) entered the world.
Jesus, God made flesh was a human, but He was also God in the flesh. His thinking was not broken, He had no sin in His heart. He was a pure human, he demonstrated what it’s like to be close to God. To live out the image of God as we were intended.
He demonstrated Gods power, and Gods wisdom. But he also showed us how to live by Gods thinking, and Gods heart. And through His death He was the sacrifice for sin. Through His resurrection, He showed us how to overcome it.
ππΎπ€Have you ever thought something was completely right and then looked back and realized how mistaken you were?
ππΎπ€Have you ever thought you had the best intentions and looked back and realized that somehow your motives that you thought were pure actually weren’t?
That is the sin in our hearts clouding our perspective. Getting into our thinking and getting into our habitual ways of being and it hurts!
Sometimes the sin of others against us also clouds our thinking. The sin of others against us can change our brain and nervous system just as much as our own sin! This is relational trauma.
That was the case with me. The abuse of my mom when I was a kid corrupted me inside. It distorted my view of myself and others. It impacted my ability to trust. It set me on a path of broken relationships filled with dysfunction!
Now, that is not to say I didn’t make my own choices and have my own sin condition to contend with in my heart because I do and I was able to see that when I received salvation when Jesus washed my sins away and gave me a new heart and new mind.
When we receive salvation, we start the process of new thinking, because we receive Gods mind - the mind of Christ. WOW. Something so pure. A gift from God that we could never do on our own. β€οΈπ₯
A renewed mind!
This phrase "mind renewal" comes from the Apostle Paul in the book of Romans written to the Roman church. This is a New Testament book in the Bible that is a letter to the Roman church.
To the Roman church, Paul writes:
Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
The book of Romans was written in Greek.
The Greek word for renewal is: anakainoΕ, anakainizΕ
The meaning that Paul is using in Romans is: "to cause something to become new and different (i.e., better)"
That’s what happens when we receive Gods Spirit!
He changes us at the spiritual level deep inside and it causes our mind to become new and different.
When it comes to healing and personal development that’s what we want!
We don’t want to stay the same in the same old ways.
πWe want something new and differentπ
We don’t want to keep playing out the past,
πwe want to become new and different.π
We can do mindset work and nervous system work and make new decisions and access neuroplasticity and see positive changes in our lives. That is wonderful.
But these things don’t renew our mind in the Spirit because they don’t deal with the issue of sin. Only Jesus can do that!
By the power of the Spirit, your mind, your heart and your Spirit can become NEW and Different when you give your heart to Jesus. His Spirit will come in and RENEW you!
π§ You can have the mind of Christ! π§
It starts deep in your spirit and then it changes your brain and nervous system as you walk more and more in the Spirit!
1 Corinthians 2:12
Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.
