Bonus Podcast Episode  - Queen’s Gambit

Queen’s Gambit is the epitome of a high-performer grappling with childhood trauma. Beth, brilliant, excels in school, and a wonderful gift/obsession of playing chess.

However, to break the chains of sabotage, and to allow herself the true win that she desires - she’s got to wade through addiction, sorrow, abandonment and loneliness.

I loved all the scenes of her alone - honing her craft, working her skill when she’s ON. But when she’s suffering - the scenes of her alone are all about her descending into the chaos of untamed memories, trauma, and addiction.

Isn’t that SO IT?!?!

I SO related to her looming fear that she would be driven mad.

That she would turn out like her mother.

That her demons would take hold.

Ironically, it was that fear that drove her mad in her low moments.

And it was her fear and bondage to that generational trauma that robbed her of her most important chess wins again… and again.

I was once watching American Idol (Nathan and I recently binged it) and Lionel Richie said to a boy - who came from a broken past - “Your talent is your way out”.

Yeah. I remember screaming at the TV and at my Nathan lol YES - that’s so it!

And for those of you’ve read the drama of the gifted child by Alice Miller - you will get this too.

Those of us who have tremendous gifts, often have pasts which drive us into the obsession with the gift/talent/skill.

But the challenge for the high-performer, is to not be consumed by the gift - because there’s only emptiness and deep loneliness there. And then we sabotage it because we realize it’s all meaningless anyway and we don’t deserve and blah blah.

The challenge is to heal the pain of the past so we can soar in the gift - without the torture. Without the wounded-ness of soul. Without the shame and the unworthiness and addiction.

And then, the meaning is endless. And it’s beautiful.
